New Zealand’s South Island boasts the South Alps. This mountain range extends roughly the entire length of the island with peaks up to 14,000 feet in altitude. Akin to the Continental Divide of North America these stunning mountains are home to tahr and chamois. These high mountain dwellers will test the mettle of all hunters and if hunted on foot they are worthy of consideration as being on the short list of top trophy’s in the world.
Red Deer (stag), Fallow Deer, Sika, Arapawa Sheep, Elk, and Wild Boar are in the lower foothills of the South Island. Hunting on the South Island which is cooler and dryer than the North Island is perfect for those that enjoy long vistas and more open country.
The fiord country, Queenstown, and Christchurch are several stops that should be made while on the South Island.
